THE SCHOOL

The Auckland Traditional Boat Building School (ATBS) was formed during December 2005 as a charitable organisation to offer tuition in the construction, restoration and maintenance of wooden craft.

Our location is the old RNZAF Bandroom at Hobsonville Aerodrome.

Our volunteers have done a great job on stripping and renovating the interior of the building for our use. The building is ours for some time to come yet but we know where we are going when the time comes to move on. And by the way, we know the outside could do with some paint but that is not where we want to spend the money.

Boat building today is extremely varied in the different construction methods from the traditional wooden boat through to technologically advanced composite craft. Whilst most boat builders today have completed their training in a specialised construction area such as wood, steel, alloy or composite they all require common boat building skills.

Right: Our classrooms are modern, spacious and fitted with modern teaching equipment.

Boat builders must be skilful, innovative and able to set themselves high standards in the construction of fine craft. ATBS will contribute significantly to the future well-being of the boat building community through high quality tuition of motivated industry entrants.

ATBS looks forward to commencing its first full time courses in February 2008.

The following milestones have been set for 2007.

1. Registration with NZ Qualifications Authority as a Private Training Establishment
2. Registration with the Tertiary Education Commission
3. Recruitment of tutors
4. Student registration for full time classes commencement in February 2008.
